E-Invoicing for UAE Freelancers and Professional Services: The 2027 Dates
Most freelancers and consultants sit below AED 50 million in revenue. Your go-live date is 1 July 2027, and you must appoint an Accredited Service Provider by 31 March 2027.
Your Dates
Revenue below AED 50 million: appoint an Accredited Service Provider by 31 March 2027, go live 1 July 2027. Revenue of AED 50 million or more: ASP by 30 October 2026, go live 1 January 2027. The voluntary pilot opens 1 July 2026.
The administrative penalty is AED 5,000 per month of non-compliance, not per invoice.
What E-Invoicing Means for Freelancers
An e-invoice is a structured data file exchanged through an Accredited Service Provider on the Peppol network, using the PINT AE specification. A PDF emailed to a client is not an e-invoice. Nothing travels directly from your invoicing tool to the Federal Tax Authority; the ASP handles transmission and reporting.
What Changes
Every project invoice is issued in the PINT AE format and sent through your ASP
Each monthly retainer charge is its own e-invoice, not a single annual document
A contract billed across four milestones produces four e-invoices
Freelancer-Specific Challenges
1. Project-Based Invoicing
Project scope and timelines vary from job to job. The PINT AE format still requires the same structured fields on every invoice, so line descriptions, dates and VAT treatment have to be recorded consistently rather than written freehand.
2. Retainer Agreements
A monthly retainer generates twelve e-invoices a year. Each one carries its own scope description and VAT treatment at the standard 5% rate where the service is taxable.
3. Choosing an ASP
You cannot go live without an Accredited Service Provider. If your revenue is below AED 50 million, the appointment deadline is 31 March 2027, three months before the 1 July 2027 go-live. The voluntary pilot from 1 July 2026 lets you test the exchange before it is mandatory.
Get Ready Before 31 March 2027
We will confirm which phase you fall into, select an ASP, and test your invoice data against PINT AE in the pilot.
